The Apple AirPods are a series of high-end headphones and earbuds that fall in the Apple Accessories category. These highly advanced and top-notch series of earbuds were first launched in 2016 as the original AirPods. Later, a 2nd generation of the AirPods was launched in 2019. By 2020, Apple had also launched its high-end earbuds called the AirPods Pro, and over-head headphones called AirPods Max.

As of 2021, Apple has come up with the new iPhone 13, new MacBook, and now finally, the 3rd generation of AirPods. There are some mentionable changes in the new AirPods. The addition of Spatial audio and Head tracking is making up all the hype for the new generation of AirPods. If you are wondering whether the new AirPods are a good upgrade, here is everything you need to know about them!

Quick Specs

The AirPods 3 were released on October 26th, 2021. Here are some notable features and specs of the new addition to the AirPods family.

  • Earbuds weight: 0.15 ounce (4.28 grams)
  • Charging case weight: 1.34 ounces (37.91 grams)
  • Dual-beam foaming microphones
  • Skin detect sensors
  • Force sensor controls
  • H1 headphone chip
  • IPX4 water-resistant
  • Lighting cable, MagSafe or Qi-Certified wireless charging
  • Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity

Design

The design and appearance of the new AirPods are definitely the most important upgrade. The new earbuds now come in a more compact, horizontal charging case that has a light indicator on its very front. The earbuds themselves come with shorter stems that look so much like the more expensive AirPods Pro.

  • No Silicone Tips

Unlike the AirPods Pro, the 3rd generation of AirPods does not come with custom-fit silicone tips. You get all-plastic earbuds that have one nonadjustable size. Consequently, the fit may not be as comfortable and secure as the pricer Pro ones.

  • Shorter Stems

The shorter stems not only ensure a greater fit but also make room for force sensor controls. The short stems have a flattened area that you use to press, hold, or tap and take actions like pause, play, or skip a song.

  • Horizontal Orientation

The charging case that comes with these AirPods has a horizontal orientation, compared to the squarish and vertical case that came with the previous AirPods generations. The horizontal case is again a similarity between the 3rd Gen AirPods and the AirPods Pro. Unlike the first and second generations of the AirPods, this new generation is compatible with wireless charging. It snaps onto a MagSafe charger conveniently, and can also be charged with a lightning cable or any Qi-certified chargers!

  • Water-Resistant

For those worried about their sweat damaging their new AirPods 3, there is good news. You can work out, go for a run, or even wash your face on top of a sink without any worry with these new AirPods. They are IPX4 water-resistant. This means that water splashes from any direction can be withstood by the AirPods.

Battery Life

The battery life of the new and improved AirPods is said to be better than the previous models. You can enjoy up to 6 hours of listening time with just a single charge.

Meanwhile, if you have spatial audio on, the listening time goes to 5 hours on a single charge. Most of the tracks on Apple Music are compatible with spatial audio. If you have the right Spectrum bundles to stream top-quality music, then the AirPods 3 are definitely worth the upgrade!

The talk-time with the AirPods 3 is 4 hours. If you keep the earbuds in the charging case for at least 5 minutes, you get enough charge to last you for 1 hour of listening time.

Sound Features

  • Spatial Audio

Spatial audio will make you experience sound as if you are hearing it directly from the screen or the source. It is Apple’s innovative way to ensure an immersive sound experience that brings in audio from 360 degrees. Resultantly, you will be listening to 3 dimensional sound as long as the content supports spatial audio. Usually, most of the content on Netflix, Spotify, and Apple Music are compatible with spatial audio.

  • Wind-Minimizing Mic

AirPods 3 come with improved microphones that have wind-minimizing technology. Consequently, people who need to record voice-overs or have a lot of talk time with their earbuds can enjoy the clear and crisp audio output.

  • Adaptive EQ

The inward shape of the AirPods 3 allows the gadget to adapt the sound quality, direction, and other sound levels according to your ear as well as your surroundings. It is also synonymous with noise cancellation and is more like Apple’s marketing term for basic noise-canceling.

Price

The last but most important factor that you use to make a final decision is the price. As of its release on 26th October 2021, the 3rd gen AirPods cost $179 from Apple.
